Do you need to do either one of them?
Im dead against diets. Particularly for the reason peasmummy just mentioned - they dont set you up to maintain, just to lose.

Have you tried something like MFP, where you calorie count/keep a food diary. I cant say about the maintenance but I have lost 35lbs just under 3 stone and have only slowed down because Im not hardcore about it right now...but have a far better understanding of how much I am eating per day..
